    Healthcare in Germany

Germany runs a statutory health insurance system, known as the ‘GKV’. By making regular contributions from their income, residents can access doctors’ surgeries, treatments at hospitals in Germany, emergency services, and more. They pay a set percentage of their monthly salary, with employers usually contributing too.

However, there can be limitations around dental treatments, alternative medicine and eyecare, while some services carry a fee. EU nationals can typically access some healthcare using a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

International private health insurance in Germany can help offer extra peace of mind, covering gaps in the public system and providing faster treatment access. Non-residents will also need private insurance to get any and every care they need.

Frequently asked questions about health insurance in Germany
What's the difference between public and private healthcare in Germany? With public healthcare in Germany, the cost may depend on your salary, and you’ll pay monthly contributions through your wages.

Private healthcare costs, meanwhile, are based on your personal requirements. They can cover wider medical services, such as dental treatments, too.
Is health insurance necessary in Germany?Yes, it’s compulsory for German nationals and temporary residents to have some form of health insurance. Any expats planning to stay in Germany for a year or more should arrange for public healthcare, or get private insurance. These are conditions you’ve experienced, or sought advice for, prior to taking out insurance with us.
Does my international health insurance in Germany include dental cover? Many of our standard plans include emergency dental cover or dental accidents that can lead to a hospital visit. Regular dental cover, like annual check-ups, isn’t included as standard.
